PURPOSE: Show analog between diffraction of light by a two-dimensional grating and diffraction of x-rays by a single crystal.
DESCRIPTION: A laser beam is incident on a two-dimensional grating, resulting in a diffraction pattern which has the symmetry of the grating and is similar to the diffraction pattern of x-rays from a single crystal with that symmetry. A variety of optical crystals is available.
SUGGESTIONS:
REFERENCES: (PIRA unknown.)
EQUIPMENT: Laser with slides of optical crystals an two-dimensional gratings.
SETUP TIME: None.
