PURPOSE: To demonstrate standing waves in a two-dimensional medium.
DESCRIPTION: A large rectangular form and a circular form are provided for producing soap films using a specially-formulated soap solution. Careful movement allows production of various standing waves.
SUGGESTIONS: This requires a good deal of practice and patience.
REFERENCES: (PIRA 3B22.70) Several impressive film loops are available which nicely illustrate soap film oscillations. A particularly impressive loop is "Soap Film Oscillations."
EQUIPMENT: Rectangular and circular frames, soap solution and flat pan.
