PURPOSE: To demonstrate that the earth rotates.
DESCRIPTION: This is a real six-foot Foucault pendulum with an alignment ring such that it will oscillate for over one hour. It rotates at the 9.5 degree per hour rate for the latitude of Washington, D.C., so in one class period its rotation can be readily observed.
