M7-02: RADIOWAVES - POLARIZATION

PURPOSE: To demonstrate polarization of radio waves due to antenna orit\entation.

DESCRIPTION: The waves leaving the radiowave transmitter are polarized horizontally, due to the horizontal orientation of the transmitting antenna. When the receiving antenna is oriented horizontally and within the dipole radiation pattern of the transmitted wave, it will pick up radiowaves, causing the light bulb between the two sections of the receiving antenna to light. When the receiving antenna is oriented vertically, as in the photograph, the transmitting and receiving antennas are polarized oppositely, and the light will not go on even if the two antennas are very close.
