If you leave motorway M3 at Füzesabony towards Debrecen you will soon reach Lake Tisza. The River Tisza is the second longest river in Hungary. By damming the river, a lake was created in the middle of the Great Plain. It is a bird sanctuary and also a great fishing area with more than fifty species of fish. The Abádszalók Inlet is a paradise for families with children and for the lovers of aquatic sports where - uniquely in Europe - motorised sports such as water skiing are also permitted.
The Lake is part of the Hortobágy Puszta which was our first national park. Your route to Debrecen will lead you through the park. This is the largest continuous natural grassy plain in Europe. If you look around, it is striking that you can see no buildings, no hills or mountains. The major part of the park is formed by natural habitats, alkaline grasslands, meadows with smaller and larger marshes dispersed among them. 342 bird species have been registered here so far. The most typical domestic animals of the region are the longhorn grey cattle. The sweep-pole wells used for watering the animals have become the symbol of the Hungarian plain. The town of Debrecen was established on important trade routes and underwent rapid development. Due to the export of cattle in the 16th century Debrecen was the wealthiest town in Hungary. It became the centre of the Hungarian Reformation, which is why it is also referred to as the Calvinist Rome.
Hajdúszoboszló, only 22 km from Debrecen on highway 4, is one of our most popular spas. You can relax in the curative waters of several outdoor and indoor pools or you can have fun in the new Aquapark.
